Patrick O'Brian's 18 early nineteenth-century British nautical historical novels have inspired a cookbook whose recipes range from Sweetbreads in Malmsey and Gooseberry Fool to White Rats in Onion Sauce and Drowned Baby. Lobscouse & Spotted Dog by Anne Chotzinoff Grossman and Lisa Grossman Thomas is partly a work of scholarly culinary anthropology and partly an homage to a literary phenomenon by two devoted readers.
