Bucconeer Survey Results

by Lew Wolkoff

Some 146 of you may remember the Survey that appeared last year in Progress Report One. Actually, more may remember, but only 146 of you took the time to fill it out and return. Thank you very much for that. What follows belo are the results. There's not much in the way of analysis because (1) a full blown analysis of the Survey can easily turn into something resembling a doctoral thesis, and about as soporific; (2) the Bucconeer Committee isn't paying me at all for this, let alone by the word; and (3) detailed analysis leads to decision making, something for the Committee, not me, to do.

I have also included the responses to the question about apportioning time among types of programming

Rate the Features

In the multi-page table below, "Skip" is the number of people who skipped that question. The average is based on the number who did respond. The scale, in case you forgot is:

Notice that the ten highest scores were gotten by rather traditional items: the Dealer's Room (4.88), Programming (4.86), the Pocket Program (4.79), the Con Suite (4.53), Site Selection (4.48), the Art Show and the Masquerade (4.42), the Daily Newsletter and the Hugo Ceremonies (4.41), Progress Report (4.38), and the Trouble Desk and Bulletin Boards (4.33)

There was also room for people to suggest additional items. Over fifty items were suggested, a few by more than one person. Some things, like the Costuming programming were covered elsewhere. (A few were even covered in the rating questions.) Some traditions like the Hogu Ranquet and the Dead Dog Party might have been included, but if every possibility were included, the for would have been half the size of the Baltimore phone book. There were quite a few interesting ideas, ranging from specific panel ideas to major new efforts. All these comments have been passed on to the Bucconeer Committee for consideration.
