Dear Friends,

     I wish to thank everyone who took the time to send their kind comments on their Bucconeer experiences to me.  It sounds like most of you had a great time.

     A few years ago, I told our Chairman, Peggy Rae Pavlat, that all I planned to do during Bucconeer was wander around and take snapshots.

     I also stated that I wanted to produce a post-convention publication — a memory book similar to the Noreascon II and III (1980 and 1989 Worldcons in Boston) Memory Books — if there was enough money left over after the membership reimbursements.

     There will be a web version of our "Parting Shot" project posted within the next few months.   And it looks like there may be a print version as well.  My fantasy is to do a four-color offset printed publication with many halftone photographs.

     Peggy Rae authorized me to purchase twenty rolls of film.  Sadly, I was only able to use half the rolls.   I got too involved in little at-con jobs like finishing the restaurant guide, creating award certificates for the Student SF Contest, setting up the Newsletter's computers and printers, and making trips to the local Staples, CompUSA, and Kinko's.

     I managed to take around 400 snapshots during Bucconeer.  I say "snapshots" since I take pictures for pleasure (and to annoy Judy Kindell, our chairman's Number One Lackey) and don't profess to be any good at it.

     I covered the major events and took many pictures of our Guests of Honor and a few of my friends.  I had hoped to have spent much more time capturing images of our attendees, committee members and volunteers at work, and general program activities but never found enough time and energy.

     If you wish to contribute (PLEASE!) your amusing anecdotes, witty observations, whimsical drawings and cartoons, and loan of your most notable photographs for use in The Parting Shot — our collective remembrance of the 56th World Science Fiction Convention — please send them to:

     If you send photographs, PLEASE let me know if I may keep them for possible inclusion in the Bucconeer photo album.  Naturally, you should include your name; postal and e-mail addresses; the names of as many people as you can reasonably identify in your pictures; and some background information (i.e., time, place, and a short description and/or caption).

     Send your material Right Now before you start losing some of those precious memories!  The final submission deadline is December 31 , 1998.

     I would also welcome your suggestions on what material should go into The Parting Shot and how you think the web and print versions should be formatted.

     I was asked to provide some photos of Worldcons for the Baltimore City Paper a few days before Bucconeer.  Now, how do you depict an entire Worldcon in a couple of pictures?  I had plenty of the usual Worldcon shots that get published in newspapers — chicks in chainmail, Klingons in the halls, John Pomeranz in his Loony Tunes underwear — but nothing I felt could truly represent a whole Worldcon.

     This photograph of David Brin and a few of the kids in our Student SF Contest does show one of the best aspects of Bucconeer  — a successful effort to encourage kids to be creative and become involved in science fiction and fandom.
